Our Rating of JulieMay’s Bra Range
Overall Rating:
5
A 5/5 rating is a tough one for us to hand out. A brand or product needs to impress us A LOT to receive it. And sure, we’re not an industry body that can offer an official award, but we still prioritize looking out for all of our readers.
You’ll soon notice how much JulieMay prioritizes the welfare of its customers too. From sourcing the finest materials to paying the deepest level of attention to every detail during the construction of their bras.
Here’s what we’ve uncovered when we dug below the surface, and how JulieMay managed to impress even the most critical members of our review team.
Hypoallergenicity of JulieMay’s Fabrics
We’ve seen many bra companies on the market that promote their products as hypoallergenic. But upon closer inspection, there are only a small number of allergy-friendly options in the entire range.
That’s not the case with JulieMay.
Every single one of their bras is constructed from a combination of 100% pure Mulberry silk and the finest, most luxurious cotton available, organic Pima cotton.
Both silk and cotton are naturally hypoallergenic. Besides, these fabrics are an absolute delight to the senses! Just what a good bra needs to feel like.
That’s why JulieMay has made these two fabrics the staples of their product range.
The majority of their bras have an inner lining that is 100% silk while the body fabric is 78% organic Pima cotton and 22% stretch silk.
There are a few exceptions to this, such as the following products.
Back Support Full Coverage Wireless Silk Bra (main picture)
Instead of a cotton and silk blend for the body, these bras typically have 100% silk for the inner lining of the cups and 100% cotton for the body fabric and wings.
Either way, JulieMay’s entire range of bras is made from the finest, most luxurious hypoallergenic fabrics the world has to offer.
What’s the Risk of Exposure to Nickel in JulieMay’s Bras?
Fabric isn’t the only concern for women with bra allergies. Nickel is one of the top metals that people react to and it is often found in many conventional bras.
Once again, we assessed every single bra in JulieMay’s range for any potential risk of exposure to nickel, or other metals for that matter.
We’ve gotta say, we’re super impressed!
We’ve seen our fair share of bras marketed as hypoallergenic that use cheap metal for things like the underwires, hooks, clasps, strap loops, and other metal trims.
JulieMay comes through again for women with allergies!
Sure there is a portion of JulieMay’s range that is completely metal-free; no underwires, straps, loops, or hooks in sight.
However, the bras that do feature underwires are constructed with non-metallic glass fiber. It’s still bendable and elastic so you can rely on the same level of support and comfort that bras with metal underwires offer.
But it doesn’t stop there!
As an extra level of precaution, bras that do feature underwires have them encased in silk to minimize the risk of direct contact.
And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love the feeling of the finest silk in an area with very sensitive skin and that’s prone to chafing or itching?
What’s the Risk of Exposure to Latex, Elastic or Polyester in JulieMay’s Bras?
As we mentioned above, the only materials in any of JulieMay’s bras are silk and cotton.
Most bras rely on a mixture of 22% stretch silk for the body and wings of the bra to get that extra bit of stretch.
In any case, there’s no latex, elastic, or polyester in sight!
Do JulieMay Bras Use Harmful Dyes and Chemicals?
All the discoveries we’ve presented so far you can verify on your own by analyzing JulieMay’s product range on their website. However, when it comes to the dyes and the process involved, you’ll need to dig deeper.
We reached out to the JulieMay team to find out more about their fabric dyeing process.
Once again, we were super impressed with the level of care and detail JulieMay’s team invest at every step of their process.
Typically, there are many irritants and harmful chemicals used in the process of dyeing fabric. These can include harmful dyes, formaldehyde, and bleach, among many other chemicals.
JulieMay does not use bleach or other harsh chemicals when processing the fabrics. We have verified a lab report indicating 22 nasty chemicals are not present in JulieMay’s fabrics.
However, trace elements of formaldehyde are present in JulieMay’s product range.
Formaldehyde is very common in all the clothes we wear and can also be found in unprocessed fabrics. So it’s not easy to escape it 100%.
But here’s what stood out to us.
Even though the international formaldehyde standard for clothing is 100ppm, JulieMay’s bra range comes in at 11 ppm. That’s 89% lower than the standard! Cool stuff.
We also liked that there’s a conscious element to the dyeing process. That’s where the “environmentally-friendly” claims come into it.
Here’s a quote directly from JulieMay’s team about this aspect of their process:
“The industrial practice for dyeing clothing is to use a giant vat to dye one colour, which usually results in high water usage and lots of waste. However, we keep our all productions in small patch productions, and we changed to a small vat during the dyeing process, which as a result, saves lots of water and is environment friendly. All our pieces are processed by hand instead of using a big automated machine to save energy, including the steaming, ironing, and washing process.”
All in all, this is what sealed the deal for our review team and why we settled on giving JulieMay a rating of 5/5.
It’s very rare to come across this level of care and dedication to providing a quality product.
The Final Verdict: Would We Recommend JulieMay to Women With Bra Allergies?
We are exceptionally impressed by the level of care taken in all of JulieMay’s bras. From sourcing the finest fabrics from around the world to ensuring beautiful yet functional designs suitable to a range of different women.
It’s clear JulieMay goes the extra mile to ensure their bras live up to their hypoallergenic status. It’s not just about marketing for JulieMay. They go above and beyond with every detail to ensure minimal risk for anyone with sensitive skin or bra allergies.
We would definitely recommend checking out JulieMay’s range of hypoallergenic bras!
